Effective January 1, 2017, Thieme will acquire Stuttgart-based publishing house Schattauer Verlag. Schattauer’s owner and CEO Dieter Bergemann will retire from the business at age 79. Established in 1949 by Friedrich Karl Schattauer as an academic publisher for medicine and science, Schattauer’s nationally and internationally well-established portfolio today includes 21 journals and 1,200 print and digital books.



At the first Building Inclusivity in Publishing Conference in London, the Publishers Association and The London Book Fair have launched the Inclusivity in Publishing Award, supported by Equip, as part of The London Book Fair’s International Excellence Awards.

Recognising publishing companies that have demonstrated commitment to improving inclusivity across the publishing ecosystem, the new award is open to UK-based publishers. This could include diversity in content produced; marketing strategies and activities that engaged diverse audiences; or commitment to the improvement of diversity in the workforce.

Stephen Lotinga, CEO at the Publishers Association, said, “There has never been a greater need to have a more inclusive publishing industry and publishers are at the heart of driving change. From the publishing workforce through to the publishing and promotion of diverse works, publishers are able to drive the change that is needed throughout the ecosystem. We're delighted that this award will recognise a publisher that has implemented initiatives that have resulted in actual change.”

The London Book Fair will be held in Olympia, London from March 14 -16, 2017.



Amazon India, an online portal, has recently launched a dedicated Telugu book store with over 10,000 titles in Telugu language, from different genres like classics, literature, fiction, biographies, business and finance, self-help, cook books and children’s books. Amazon India offers books in seven other Indian languages like Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Gujarati and Bengali.



Technavio analysts forecast the global publishing market to reach USD 358 billion by 2020, according to their latest report. The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global publishing market for 2016-2020.

“The global publishing market will benefit from the digitization of consumer books. E-book technologies will increase the awareness of titles and stimulate book sales, while new portable e-reading services will boost electronic book sales in selected countries such as Japan, the US, and the UK,” says Ujjwal Doshi, a lead analyst at Technavio for publishing and advertising research.

It also says that e-commerce is growing by leaps and bounds. In 2015, the revenue generated by the global e-commerce market was USD 1.8 trillion, which is likely to increase to USD 4.6 trillion, growing at a CAGR of close to 21% during the forecast period.

In 2015, 55% of the consumers preferred to purchase books through e-commerce. This is mainly because of the growing reach of the e-commerce vendors. Other reasons for the increasing adoption of e-commerce for buying books are easy payment options, prompt delivery, and hassle-free return policy, which also increases the credibility of the e-commerce vendors. A few popular e-commerce vendors offering books are eBay, Amazon, Walmart, and Alibaba.



Effective April 2017, IDW Publishing, a subsidiary of IDW Media Holdings, has entered into a multi-year book sales and distribution partnership with Penguin Random House Publisher Services (PRHPS) exclusively for the trade bookstore market.

While, Diamond Comics Distributors will continue to sell and distribute graphic novels and comics exclusively to the comic book specialty market. Diamond will also continue to handle distribution of graphic novels, books, and other merchandise to the mass market in the UK.
