While Amar Chitra Katha (ACK) has long told stories of India’s history, culture, heritage, mythology, and inspiring personalities, they have also built a distinct genre of books that chronicle the journeys of institutions and sectors that have contributed to the nation’s growth. These stories document the vision, innovation, and impact of organizations that have helped shape modern India.

Today, more institutions are looking for meaningful ways to document and share their journeys. A well-crafted narrative not only preserves their legacy but also makes their story engaging and accessible for future generations.

Amar Chitra Katha’s storytelling approach, combined with their editorial diligence and research-driven process, enables them to bring these stories to life with authenticity and impact. As a result, they have had the opportunity to collaborate with several institutions of national stature across diverse industries and domains

More recently, they have partnered with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to launch a special comic book titled HAL: The Force Behind the Forces. “It gave us the opportunity to tell the story of India’s aerospace journey through the evolution of one of its most significant institutions. By presenting this story in the Amar Chitra Katha style of storytelling, we aim to make an important chapter of India’s technological and industrial progress engaging, accessible, and relevant for readers of all ages,” shares the spokesperson at ACK.

The collaboration…

The collaboration was initiated by HAL, who approached ACK with the idea of creating a book around its journey. As they explored the subject, it became clear that HAL’s contribution to India’s aerospace and defence ecosystem deserved to be documented in a way that was engaging, accessible, and true to its legacy. This led to the creation of this book, which captures HAL’s remarkable journey and its role in shaping India’s aerospace capabilities.

HAL shared extensive reference material with ACK, including books, brochures, archival photographs, and videos documenting the organisation’s history. Alongside this, ACK’s editorial team conducted independent research to build a comprehensive narrative.

The archival photographs proved especially valuable, as they helped ACK’s illustrators accurately recreate important people, aircraft, and historical moments.

Editorial challenges …

One of the biggest editorial challenges was making the story of an institution engaging without compromising on factual accuracy or the scale of its contribution to India’s aerospace journey. “We addressed this by framing HAL’s history through the eyes of three schoolchildren visiting the HAL Aerospace Museum, making the narrative more relatable and immersive. Another challenge was simplifying technical aviation concepts, which we did by using familiar analogies and clear explanations so that the book remained both accurate and easy to understand,” adds spokesperson from ACK. “Throughout the process, we ensure that the details and milestones that define an institution’s journey and success are accurately represented. Our role is to make the story engaging without compromising on its authenticity or historical integrity.”

The timelines…

The entire project took around six months, from the initial concept to final publishing. A significant amount of time was dedicated to research and fact-checking to ensure the story was accurate, engaging, and entertaining. Every stage of the process—from scripting to illustrations and production—was carefully developed to do justice to HAL’s remarkable journey.

Distribution & sales…

The response from HAL has been extremely encouraging. At the book launch, the team appreciated the level of historical accuracy, attention to detail, and the way the story had been presented.

While HAL commissioned the book, the decision on how it is distributed and positioned rests entirely with them. ACK’s focus has been to create a book that is engaging, informative, and versatile enough to find a place in any environment where HAL chooses to showcase its journey.

What next?

ACK is currently working on multiple stories, formats, and new genres that are yet to be explored, as they continue to expand the scope of Amar Chitra Katha while staying true to their storytelling roots.

Their next major release is Musicians of India, which celebrates the lives and legacies of some of India’s greatest musical icons.
